A terrible lawn pest has silently taken over the lower mainland here in southern BC. This pest is known as, the European Chafer Beetle. Small in size, and a short life cycle of only 1 year, these beetles will cause your lawn to be a definite eyesore. The worst of the damage is caused by animals such as crows, raccoons, skunks, etc. when they dig and tear up sections of your lawn in search of their next feast. This is typically the time homeowners realize the beetles have infested their lawn.
Adult beetles mate in late spring and early summer in the canopies of trees. The young larvae is laid in the soil in July. After feeding on the fibrous roots of your grass, symptoms are displayed which alert to their predators where they are located. The feeding begins in the fall and carries on right through the winter season, or whenever your lawn has been plucked free from every grub. Chemical treatment to control and kill the larvae is possible, by hiring a company certified to apply such chemicals, but the best way forward ultimately, is prevention.
Keeping your lawn healthy and in excellent shape is the best way to shake your worries of having such an issue. Things like dethatching, aeration, fertilization, proper watering, ensuring proper PH levels, and higher mowing all contribute to better lawn health. A healthier lawn with a stronger and deeper root system drastically reduces the symptoms displayed from the grubs feeding on roots, and it makes your lawn area less desirable for adult beetles to lay their new larvae. Lawns that are not well taken care of will quickly and easily display symptoms and will be an easy target for predators.
If your lawn has been damaged, rake up all of the torn up lawn in the spring and apply seed and top dress with a high nutrient top soil or compost mixture. Fertilize and water properly through the spring and summer to ensure the area fills out well and remains healthy.
